What Is Necessary

Read Mark 8:1 through 9:50

In a small Ohio town, a coal train collided with a propane truck, sending the truck skidding on its side into the railroad station. Propane poured from the damaged tanker, and law enforcement officials rushed to evacuate the downtown area. A single spark could set off a massive explosion. As citizens fled the area, a lone man walked straight into the cloud of spreading fuel and forced shut the leaking valve. In the face of almost certain death, he had done what was necessary to prevent disaster. He had allowed neither fear not danger to prevent his reaching that fuel valve.

When Jesus told His disciples He must be killed and rise again, Peter rebuked Him. But Jesus allowed no person or circumstance to keep Him from His goal—our salvation.

We know that following Jesus pits us against the world. But we do what is necessary to reach our goal—eternity with Jesus Christ.

“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34).

Thought for Today: Even a difficult path is less rough when our attention is focused on our destination.
