Waving Goodbye

Read Luke 3:1 through 4:44

Jane was proud of her son’s commitment to Christ and his willingness to work as a missionary. But she shook as Tommy kissed her goodbye. Jane’s only son walked toward airport security on his way to another country.

Jane cried, especially remembering that Tommy’s father had died doing mission work in the very same country in which Tommy would land in ten hours. As she watched Tommy walking away she remembered Christ’s words:

But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent” (Luke 4:43).

That is why Christ was sent and why Christ died. That is also why Tommy’s father was sent. His death opened doors for more of Christ’s followers to fly into a country now longing for truth.

Tommy waved goodbye to his mother so many others would notice God waving hello to them.

Thought for Today: Because others were willing to wave goodbye to their own worlds, we are now able to know God’s love in our worlds.

Quicklook: Luke 4:42–44
