I'am not real sure. Every once in a while, I'll just shake it out real good, and might blow if off lightly with my air compressor. Not sure if that's right or now but works for me.(K&N)

If its a k&n then u need to buy a recharge kit from an auto parts store and it will have instructions on how to clean it. They are fairly cheap and they work wonders. It includes a cleaner that cleans out the dirt and old oil and it comes with the replacement oil too.

When recharging the filter, don't over spray it with the oil.Doing so will screw up the mass air sensor readings. ;)

while you have it apart it's a good idea to buy some mass air sensor cleaner. Just take your mass air housing and all off your car and spray the actual mass air sensor with the cleaner. It helped my car out on fuel mileage and it ran a little better also. Just a thought.

At autozone we actually sell MAF sensor cleaner... the stuff is a miracle. It's about 7 bucks a can but it'll last a long time and you can use it knowing that it's safe for the sensor. ;]

You wouldn't beleive the number of people we have come in with check engine codes reading a faulty MAF... I look and sure enough they have a K&N or other reusable filter... and they will have recently recharged it. Gotta be delicate with that oil.

I used to work at the good ol autozone my self. That's where i picked mine up at. I still to this day hold the record at our store for the most fuel injector cleaner sold...29. I love the Mass Air sensor cleaner, it works wonders!

Lol. Well currently our store is #1 with the St Jude donations... $700+ with the #2 store being more than $400 behind us. ;]

But we're always at the bottom when it comes to those monthly specials. Lol. I'm #2 at the store for most rewards cards given out.

There's alot of little stuff we sell that comes off as a joke, like the MAF cleaner, that actually works wonders.

... I had a lady ask me for headlight fluid the other day.

Her husband had said it as a joke and she'd actually come looking at it. I felt pretty bad telling her that there was no such thing...
