Read Galatians 1:1 through 3:29
Mary stood in the aisle reading the ingredients listed on the tortilla chip bag. “I can’t even pronounce some of these names,” she declared. She picked up another bag. “Aha! This one has corn flour, vegetable oil, and salt—no added junk.”
Paul learned that teachers who came to Galatia after him added “junk” to the simple truth of the gospel. They claimed that salvation required more than simply having faith in Christ. According to Paul, those teachers should be eternally condemned (Galatians 1:8). The Galatians had already received the Holy Spirit and eternal life when they believed Jesus took the punishment for their sin. He asked them:
Are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? (Galatians 3:3).
The believers needed to understand they could never achieve on their own the worthiness that Jesus provides. Adding circumcision or any other requirement of the Law was not needed. That false teaching devalued Jesus’ death on the cross.
Salvation through Jesus Christ has no additives.
Thought for Today: Salvation is not about what you do; it is about what Jesus has done
