I Believe in the Bible
Attentive
Read Nehemiah 8:1–6
Pierre grew up in the shadow of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame, but he knew nothing of Christ and had never even held a Bible. His unbelief solidified while he attended the university. Then Pierre stepped into a coffeehouse run by Christian students. He liked the honest discussions and the people, and he began voraciously reading the Bible they gave him. Just before completing his degree, Pierre accepted Jesus as his Savior.
In Nehemiah 8, the Jewish exiles had raised a generation of children in pagan Babylon and returned to their homeland to rebuild their homes and city. They were unfamiliar with most of the Law, but they were drawn to it enough to stand for hours to hear it read.
And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law (Nehemiah 8:3).
How attentive are we to God’s Word? We do not have to be a French university student or a returned Jewish exile to hang on the Bible’s every word.
Challenge for Today: Rate your enthusiasm about reading God’s Word to gauge how much it really means to you.
