View Full Version : Longtube Headers

To all those people out there thinking of upgrading to longtube headers, I will say this.

1. If you are installing them yourself, allow 12 hours minimum. More if you don't have a lift and air tools. Now, this is for somebody who hasn't done a lot of wrenching, keep this in mind.
2. If you are taking it to a shop to have them installed, don't be suprised when they quote you 8-10 hours labor. Average time quoted for just removing and replacing exhaust manifolds is 7 hours, and they are easy!
3. Make sure you clearance EVERYTHING! If you don't, you will have a rattle or two. Trust me on this!

With that being said, I love my new headers! I put Flowtech longtubes, off-road X pipe, and Magnaflow cat-back on today (big thanks goes out to Stan00GT). Took me 6-6.5 hours, with some help from other guys at the end. Car sounds so much better from the BBK X and Flowmasters! I have some clearancing to do, and I have a couple small exhaust leaks (hey, Flowtech is cheap, Magnaflow isn't, they can't mate up perfectly!) but other than that, I am stoked! Grant took some pics and got a sound clip, he'll post them later I'm sure.

Good info! Maybe I will do my header install myself. After reading this. I usually do all the wrenching on my car. But, I was going to be lazy on the headers.

I will put it to you this way. My dad has an 07 with BBK longtubes. He took it to a local shop back home, and they quoted him 350 to install them. He laughed, and said do it. They told him when he picked it up that they will probably never do another set, and if they do, they will charge more like 500-600 to install them. I don't know what's so hard about the S197 cars, but they talked like it was a nightmare.

Dang! Don't tell me that. Because I don't want my car apart for a day or so. Maybe I will have the dealership do it then. Anyone else out there do their own Header install on a S197?

Actually, when I do get headers and an X-pipe. I think I will just have Brenspeed do the install. They are doing my CAI and Tune. I mean, if they only charge 900 for a supercharger install. Then Headers can't be much. Plus they specialize in the Mustangs, so it is prolly easy for them. They do hundreds.

It is a pretty big pain, especially if you dont drop the k member. I did it with the k member in place, with 2 of my buddies it took us about 16 hours to get it done.

The S197 cars arent too bad, but the 2v cars arent fun and the 4v cars will make you never want to do it again. lol
