View Full Version : Slightly Different Shift Knob

I have a Hurst billet shifter in my '08 GT but the 1-3/4" shifter knob is too small for my liking. The obvious fix for the DIY type is to drill a billiard ball, add a 3/8-16 threaded insert (which matches up with the shifter arm on the Hurst billet shifter) and thread that sucker on.

However, I found a couple of options that add a slightly different twist -- a black cue ball or a white 8-ball. They are regulation size and weight.

opinions?

call me old school but i like the white ball, if you want just remove the shifter all together and sell it to me...haha

the white hurst knob would be great if it were ~2" diameter. 1.75" diameter is just a little too small for my hand.

The white 8 ball would be cool. Or a traditional black 8 ball. I do like the solid black ball. Definitely put up some pics when your done.

I ordered some new threaded fittings and a standard cue ball to test out the new fitting. A standard cue ball with a brass threaded fitting is quite possibly the least expensive, most durable shift knob on the market -- the "Hurst" labelled knobs are around $25-$35 where a cue ball and brass fitting is maybe $8-10 in raw materials.

That's pretty cheap!

It's definitely an inexpensive option for anyone looking for a larger shift knob. I had to order 10 of the threaded brass fittings to get the one I wanted (typical minimum order nonsense) so I am going to have several left over with 3/8" x 16 internal threads if anyone wants to give this a go for their Hurst shifter. Not sure who else uses a 3/8 x 16 thread on their shift arms but it is the right fit for the Hurst shifters for the 05-09 Stangs.

whoa - just checked on the black Hurst shift knob - more than one site has that thing priced to where it is like $45 after shipping. I think I could make an entire set (cue ball and 1-15 billiard balls) for that price.

the prototype white cue ball was easy enough to drill and to get the threaded insert to fit. Tried it out yesterday and today and it feels great. Oddly enough, it seems a little quieter than the factory Hurst knob. I'll get a pic up a bit later tonight.

Heck yeah! Can't wait to see it.

pics attached - cue ball (2.25" diameter) next to original Hurst shift knob (1.75" diameter) and a pic of the cue ball threaded to the chrome Hurst shift arm. Sunlight reflects off the cue like crazy which makes it semi-difficult to get a clear pic of it.

It looks sweet! I like it a lot.

thanks. Sticking with the stock threads was a good call by pro5.0 - almost all of the shift knobs that fit the Hurst (other than ones made by Hurst) require the use of a threaded adapter which is just one more point where it can come loose and rattle (unless you use loctite red on the threaded adapter like I did on the 2" shift knob I got from JEGS while I was working on my cue ball shift knob). Now I am really thinking about turning one of those white 8 balls or black cue balls into shift knobs. I think the white 8 ball would look good and it is a bit unusual.
