View Full Version : What does it sound like when a smog pump fails on a 5.0?

I replaced the harmonic balancer yesterday on the 93’ cobra. After a few hours of driving with no problems I now have some pulley whine! The idler pulley is ok, the power steering pump pulley has a slight wobble, but the smog pump is whining bad! Sounds like a bad bearing! It’s pretty loud!

Could the smog pump pulley be the cause of it or the whole smog pump should be replaced? I’ve never had a bad smog pump before! Any help would be appreciated.

Btw the stang has sat all winter in the garage until this week when I started driving her again.

A lot of people just get a shorter belt and do away with the pump all together.

what about the egr? it depends on the smog pump.

i don't want to use a Smog Pump Eliminator or block all the emission holes!

Well you could go down to O'Reillys and get a rebuilt pump..

You can remove the smog pump with no issues what so ever. That was the first thing I did to my 1990. Just get a shorter belt.

so you just bypassed the pulley and left your smog still intact?

No, i completely removed the smog pump and routed the belt like the top right diagram.

when mine failed on my fox it made a fast ticking sound, like a card in bicycle spokes.
I got the freewheel thingy, so I could use my stock belt.
