Getting new gears is a definite upgrade, from what I've heard. A good deal for you would be to get a take-off 8.8". It'll come with 3.73's or whatever other ratio you want, as well as T-Loc, so you'll get immensely better traction than the stock V6 rear.

Front wheel drive...? This is a Mustang forum, man, if you drive a 'Stang, you have RWD.

Here's the skinny on gears. When people say 3.31's or 4.10's and whatnot, what they're referring to is the final drive ratio. The driveshaft and rear wheels don't spin an equal amount. The final drive ratio is a measurement of how many times the driveshaft will spin in relation to one revolution of the wheel. The final drive ratio can be altered to allow the driveshaft to spin more or less, thus changing the amount of torque applied to the wheels. Shorter gears, such as 4.10's, will allow more torque to be applied to the ground, but the RPM's of the engine will be higher as a result of the quicker-rotating driveshaft, resulting in poorer gas mileage, among other things.

Now, this is where things get a little hairy. Gears add no power whatsoever. They are a "torque-multiplier." They simply allow the engines power to be transferred in a different manner. To decide which gears to get is really a case-by-case situation. Not one gear ratio is perfect. Many factors can influence your optimal gear, including manual/auto, amount of highway driving, desired performance, other mods, tire height, etc.
