View Full Version : Doing work on my 02

Well, I am getting ready to do some work on my 02 so I figured I would go ahead and make a build thread out of it. The car is in need some some suspension work and other odd's and end's. Ty has rode in it with the nitrous and he can agree, it wheel hops.....BAD. Other things are going to be ordered and put on also.
Parts that I have ordered:
Strange 10 way adjustable front struts
MSD RPM activated window switch
Autometer phantom fuel pressure gauge
SVT focus fuel pump
I went and picked up a set of Hotchkis upper and lower control arms from a friend of mine today. Also, I picked up a rear coilover kit also. I bought both $100, couldnt pass that up. I really didnt want the control arm's (I want to go with a UPR set up) but couldnt pass on the price. The only bad thing, is that the coilover kit has to light of a spring, so I had to order a higher pound spring. Also the control arm's are needing new bushings in them so I had to order that also.
While I have the control arm's out, I might go ahead and reinforce the torque boxes. I havent really decided yet. What I would really like to do, is pull the rear end out, sand blast it, paint it and put 4.10 gears, 31 spline axles and differential in it, but geez it's so expensive!
Next on the list:
Subframe connectors
Tubular K member, A arms and front coilovers
Caster Camber plates
As I work on it I will post pictures up and keep those intersted up to date. I am almost looking to do kind of a budget build on this, so if anybody hears about any parts for a good price, please let me know.
Here are a few pictures of the control arms and coilovers and what not.

Sounds like it is going to be a cool little setup Jake. By the way I couldn't remember if you happen to be using a ZEX kit or not. If you are then do not wire the MSD window switch like its paper work will tell you too. It interupts ground which you can not do on with the ZEX NMU. It will still work you just need to wire it to the white TPS wire instead of ground. Of course if your not using a ZEX kit none of that matters LOL.

Yeah I am using the ZEX kit. Thanks for the advice BTW.

Thats looks like the old school Ground Pounder rear coil over kit! Ground pounder made good products, never understood why they went out of business.

No problem man. I have just dealt with a lot of customers that have been through that and it will make the car do weird stuff. Can't wait to see it when it gets done.

Hey did you get that window switch wired in last night?

no not yet. I am going to wait till Sunday to do it. I have done some trading and got a 31 spline rear end with 4.10 gears that I am swapping into my car Sunday. So I decided I am going to wait and do it then.

Sweet that thing should love the gears.

I sure do hope so. I am ready hoping that once I get the rear end in, control arms, coilovers, and some drag radials, that it will really be a moster from a dig. If I can get it to hook off the line on spray, it should leave out HARD.

A little update:
The rear end deal fell thru. I was planning on using my Hotchkis upper and lower control arm's, but when I went to swap rear end's, the control arm bolts were siezed up in the control arm bushings. The bolt's had to be cut out and that car is my only mean's of transportation right now. So I had to overnight (which really sucked, $80 in shipping!!!!) some UPR single adjustable lower control arm's with sypherical bushings.

Let me tell you, these things are AWESOME. My car no longer has any wheel hop issues. I love them big time. As soon as I can get a little money saved up, I am going to go ahead and swap over to the UPR double adjustable uppers with sypherical bushings. I really wish some of you had rode in the car before I put these bushings in. All the little vibration's and everything have all went away.

From the pic the controls arms were already out. How did they get stuck and have the be cut out?? Either way at least you got it fixed. Let us know what you think of the upr's. Broncobullitt on here wants to pick a set up, however I think he is just wanting the boxed in ones.

From which pic??? The one up top? Those are the new UPR control arm's. My stock lower control arm's are the ones that had to be cut out. Sorry i forgot to specify on that one.
The car had all stock suspension before these and from the looks of things, not a single bushings, tie rod end, shock, strut, or anything has been changed. So I wont be surprised if I have to cut out a few more bolts here and there.
As for the control arm's, I love them. It is by far the best addition I have made to the car so far. It rides alot smoother, and does not spin near as bad.
These control arms have heim joints at the end of the control arm that bolts to the car. My only complaint about the control arm's is that you can hear that heim joint moving back and forth at VERY low speeds. Now don't get me wrong, the only way you can hear it is if you are making a turn, and you have the radio off. It's not like it's loud, but if you listen for it, you can hear it. Other than that, 0 complaints here.
For every mustang I buy, I will get another set. I am a UPR dealer, so if you want some just let me know and I will give you my price on them.

I meant you had pics of some in the first post of this thread, the red ones. Did you not use those at all??
stumbaugh

oh ok. No I ended up not using them at all. When the bolt's got cut, the bushings also got cut. Well, I had to have to bushings right away so I could get my car back out on the road. It was going to take Hotchkis 2 weeks to get me new bushings. So I had to call UPR and have them overnight me some control arm's.

Also got the MSD Window switch installed. I still have to do a little buttoning up with the wires and stuff to make it a little cleaner install. But it's in for the most parts.
http://i798.photobucket.com/albums/yy263/Stumbaugh/photo-17.jpg
I know it's kind of a crappy picture, but I installed it in the glove box. I was going to go with the simple way and put it in the engine bay somewhere, but I couldnt find a spot to put it that I thought looked good.
Coilovers are next. I got my new springs in, so hopefully next week sometime I can get those put in.

Well I have been doing some stuff here and there to my car. So I decided I would go ahead and give another up date.
I went ahead and bought an autometer phantom oil pressure and fuel pressure gauge. I moved the wideband into a pillar along with the fuel pressure and put the oil pressure gauge where the wideband was.

I also buttoned up the rest of the wiring for the MSD window switch. I owe a big thanks to HammerHead for the wiring diagram he sent me. I couldnt have done it without that! Thanks Aaron!

I also aquired a set of 4.30 gears. Looking to get these put in very soon.
http://i798.photobucket.com/albums/yy263/Stumbaugh/photo-18.jpg
That's all right now. I am going to paint my calipers red this week and buff the car. I will get some good pictures after that's all said and done

oh ya for sure. I'm pretty excited about getting them, but I'm about 99% sure they will make my car useless on the street due to tire spin.
Thanks for the comments BTW.

4.30s on the street do alot better on the 4v cars, but im sure it will be just fine even with a 2v, just start out in 2nd everywhere...haha

Well, I quit updating this because I decided I wasnt going to work on it anymore since I got the fox, but I have decided to go ahead and start back on her. The UPR double adjustable upper control arm's and spherical bushing are sitting over at Mikes waiting on me. Also, mike hooked me up with some one off Quarter Mile Mustang torque box reinforcement's.
Here's the torque box reinforcements:

Mike and I will be putting this stuff on my car very soon. As soon as it all get's put on, I will post up pictures.

Well, I went over to Mikes and Davis, Mike and I installed the control arm's. I must say, if/when I get another mustang, if it does not have these control arm's in it, it will be the first mod. It has made it hook so much better. I didnt snap a picture of them installed, but here is a picture of the stock control arm next to the UPR double adjustable
http://i798.photobucket.com/albums/yy263/Stumbaugh/photo-35.jpg
I figure the next thing to happen will be gears, subframe connectors, and upper/lower torque box reinforcements.
