I'm still considering a tuner. I've found a used SCT Xcal 1 for sale. It was used on a lightning, but I've been told it should work on my Cobra. My question, what would I have to do to get tunes for my car? I can get it for pretty cheap, but if I have to pay someone to download tunes for my car/mods, then I may be better off getting new one. Thanks.

Im not real sure, but I think you can just get the tunes from SCT or from where you buy the tuner... not familiar with the SCT tuners though. I know I use to use Diablo and you could get the tunes from diablo or from a diablo tuner like JLP,PSP, or anyone so I am sure the SCT is somewhere similar. Also in a case of buying a used tuner or getting a tune from somewhere you didnt buy the tuner you could get a custom tune for about $100 with Diablo.

The programmer has the tune already in it. All you do is plug it in and download it. I will show u how to eliminate the rear o2's with it if u get it.

Yea, eliminating the rear 02's is the main reason I'm looking at it. Even though the tunes in it are for a lightning, can I (we) modify them to work well with my Cobra? I'm thinking for $70 I can't really go wrong, but just want to make sure it's not gonna run into more money. Thanks.

Yeah, when we plug the tuner in it will configure what model ford vehicle you have. It works for all gas powered ford vehicles. Ford $70 i would say u better jump on it

but you can have a custom tune sent to you as well like like on a predator right?

I ended up contacting SCT earlier. They failed to answer my question. All they told me is that I should not get the X1 because it is already outdated. I'm not sure now, but I'd still like to know the answer so I can keep my eye out for one. Thanks guys!

you need a new tune for your a car. A Lightning tune will not work in a cobra. Amazon, or Dynospeed can right you a tune for your car and mods. I would e-mail them and talk to them. Is the tuner un-locked from the car it came from?

hey man, if you just want your car tuned and come out cheap, I can do it, I use Sniper software and can program 2 vehicles right ouit of the box which i've done my car and truck, but I can by bullets to do more vehicles. if you want i will contact sniper and see what the bullet key code cost and thats all i will charge.

Do you have a Check Engine light?

Yep, got a CEL. I have MILs, but they quit working. PM sent on the Sniper tuning. After talking to SCT, it isn't worth buying a used tuner. If for some reason it isn't unlocked, you have to send it in and pay $150 for them to unlock it. Then I'd have to take it to a dealer to have tunes for my car made, another $50-$150.

If you bought the programmer it wouldnt have a lightning tune in it. When you plug the tuner into the car, it configures what vehicle u have. As i said before, it will work on any gasoline powered ford vehicle. and yes a tune can be unloaded to the programmer.

You can eliminate the rear 02 check engine code by turning off your rear 02's with an SCT XCal2. MIL's are the cheaper route for that. Luckily, I've been trying to sell my XCal2 Strategy Flash tuner that I've had for a couple years if you would want to buy it. Not only can you clear the code, but you can use it later to get a custom tune for your car. I've checked and it WILL work on your 96 Cobra. By making minor adjustments, this one website claims you can gain 11rwhp/15ft-lbs. on your car (don't hold me to those numbers).

I've used this tuner to tune my late 99 Cobra vert and my previous 03 Cobra coupe. I sent it into SCT in May to get it unlocked and get the latest updated firmware. Honestly, I tried using it on my new vert and on the dyno the car wouldn't accept the tune, so I bought a new X3 at the shop. I did though tweak my vert with it before I had it dyno-tuned. I haven't used it since then. But I have the original box, CD for datalogging, USB cable, SCT emblem, and instructions. I'll sell it to you for $150.
