We've got a 2001 Dodge 3500 with a Cummins Turbo Diesel. I can't remember the number, but it's got just over 200k miles. It's spraying oil out of the front. We took it to a local mechanic and he said that the motor needs rebuilt/replaced. He said something like the piston's cracked. He's just a small mechanic and didn't want to do the job. We called another shop who we've used for work on our tractor, he would do it. He quoted like $7k for a rebuild or $11k for a new motor. I know nothing about this type of stuff, but that seems pretty high to me (considering we got the truck for $7k a few years ago). Do you guys have any suggestions about a reputable shop to use? We're not looking to build the motor or anything, it's got more than enough in stock form. We are in no real hurry, just need it done by this summer I think. Thanks!

Hey man,,,,,I work for Cummins. Our shop is off of Galloway next to the Petro. Are you sure it needs rebuilt and not just a front seal? High crankcase pressure can cause seals to blow out, but hopefully that's not your problem. You can give me a call if you like, 352-1232.

My dad dropped it off at another shop today, the guy's gonna take a look at it and get back. We've never used the first mechanic before, and the guy didn't charge us to take a look at it, so I'm not sure how thorough he was. I don't know anything about them, so I couldn't tell the difference. All I know is that there's oil all over the front of the motor (could be the fan blowing it back though, making it look much worse). The truck is missing, barely has enough power to pull itself. With our farm vehicle out of commission, we have no way of pulling a trailer big enough to haul it to a shop. A neighbor offered to take the truck to a shop for us using his truck/trailer, so it's one of those things where we had to go ahead even though we weren't quite ready to do so. We'll know more in a few days, and hopefully it isn't gonna need a new motor.
