Hey fella's,
I have a 65 coupe (289) and I have been chasing a few leaks from warn out gaskets, ect..ect... Anyways, I have the water pump off of it right now, and was wondering about going back with an electric pump. Just wanted to know if it would be worth the $$$$ for one. I know it'll free up a few pony's, but I am more concerned with drivability and over heating issues. Are Electric Water Pumps, capable of keeping the motor cool during summer months on a cruiser car? I know a few that use them on race applications so I want to make sure it's sufficient for a weekend cruiser.
Also
Since I have 75% of the front acc's off and torn apart, now wouldnt be a bad time to check into a cam upgrade. I just want something mild with good street manners. Any ideas?

Are you using stock heads or do you have aftermarket set? The reason I ask is that can make a difference on the results you see from the cam as well. I had the Ford Racing E cam and it had very good street manners.

Electric water pumps are awsome. In my opinion, they cool better than a belt driven pump. I would definitly go with the E cam from ford.

I should have listed that tiny bit of info on the OP.
The car is equipped with stock heads.... I am looking into some GT40's mildly worked w/ a 302 for down the rd. But for the time being, I'd like to slide in a little better cam for kicks, and giggles till the 302 comes together.
It's an auto also but with an AOD already installed..... Best I can tell I still have stock 2.80 gears also, that need to be updated to some 3.73's or maybe even some 4.10's if they make them for an 8" Ford. I havent researched the gears yet so Im not a 100% sure what options I have.
Anyone with a classic stang, or exp. with them feel free to post up what you did, and ideas, ect...ect... I was gonna keep it more "stock" but that's just not me.... Im into modding, and playing, and this will be a slow enjoyable weekend project that will take a few years with the allowance my wife will let me have to save up for all the options and mod's Im wanting to explore!

If you have the money the EP is a good mod. But what is the rest of the cooling system like? I would look into a good 4 core Rad, new hoses and a 160* thermostat....if that hasnt been upgraded yet

It's got a 3 core heater w/ 160* installed already
Someone on another forum said I may want to upgrade the Alternator... If it's an old 35amp alt, it may have issues keeping up with an electric fan, electric pump, and charging the battery, plus handling the powah from my stock AM radio with it's blazzzin 9watts of powah! lol
Kind of debating the EP, and thinking about just reusing the water pump, but mounting the pully on the pump, w/o the fan and use the e-fan already installed.

Yea you can get 4.10's or any gear you want from summit or jegs. I know my my uncle has a 8" in his Falcon and he has 4.10's and a spool, but i think stuff like spools are whats hard to come by.

What kind of RPM's is he turning with those 4.10's around highway speeds?
What size wheel/tire combo does he have? Im runnin 14's at the moment, but looking to upgrade those as well. I have found some TorqThrust look-a-likes for a good price that are 17x8 with the correct offset for the 65. Im thinking about getting the 17x7's for the front and 17x8's in the rear with some nice directional tires to go with it.
All of this will play in to factoring out what gears I end up with.
Thanks for the tips, let's keep um coming!

im not sure, he dont have them in right now since he dont race the car anymore, but he is talking about putting them back in. he also had 14" wheels and last time it went to the track it had 26" tall tires but this car turns crazy rpms. I will ask him if he remembers about what rpm's it was at cruisning, but he has a C4.

he said his rpm was around 35hundred, but like I said its with a C4, so with an aod 4.10 should be a perfect gear for street/strip

Thanks a ton man!! That's was some great info for me to chew on....
One more question for everyone...... On the push-rod motors what are the MAX temps you can run before you need to start worrying about over heating and damage.

alot depends on heads, cause getting hot usually will affect the heads first. if you have aluminum heads they will disapate heat more than a iron or steel head. but you need to keep it below 200.

That's what I was figuring.....
I put the car back together last night, and left the fan-blade off of it. And re-wired the E-Fan. (It's got a 180* T-stat) right now, but I have a 160* sitting on the counter... Anyways, took it for a test spin and at the lights, and in slow speeds the temp would hover around the 190* marker. On the interstate she would cool on down to 175*-180*. This is a concern because it was mid 70's last night so I'm not 100% certain that this set-up will work when we get into the DAWG DAYS of summer and have some high 90*-100* days.
Do you think I need to install the 160*, would that make enough difference to possibly keep it cool in the summer months? Or do I need to re-work the E-fan idea and figure out a way to mount a fan shroud, w/ bigger E-fan. Might have to upgrade to the 4 core radiator as suggested above.

I would install the 160*...its not going to hurt anything. Another option you can do for wheels is running a set of 94-04 17" wheels. They are a direct bolt on. If you ran a 245-45-17 it will give you an overall size of 25.6". A set of 03-04 Bullitt style wheels would look sick on there!
I have 4.10's in my car. With a 25.6" tall tire and a .62 final drive ratio i turn 2500 rpms @ 70mph.

I already tried the 99-04 wheels/tires. I need a spacer about 1/4 inch for the rears, but the front wheel will not clear the spindle ect..ect... I still have 4 wheel DRUM BRAKES!!! :o :o :o :o

you can try the 160 thermostat, but more tha likley you will need a shroud if it happens to over heat with a 180. a shroud will make a HUGE difference amd if that dont work, may look into a dual fan set up

Not sure what type of fan u have. But a shroud from a fox might be an easy pick up from a junk yard

Maybe this information from my website will help give you an idea of what RPMs you can expect with a given ratio and a given tire height:
