Can anyone give me some advice on spring compression tools? I am up putting the front suspension back together, but Advanced Auto only has the two hook setups. My Chilton's manual shows one with a plate.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
Nick

I use the 2 hook style from harbor freight. They are a pain to use because of clearance issues, but they work.

I have one of those on hand, and I could tell it is going to be a fight to get the springs in that way. I will give'em a try this evening.
Thanks for the info!

Dude I would highly reccomend putting something around the spring i.e a cargo strap thats tough as hell.. in case that compressor decides to let loose .. Don't want cha taking a spring to the dome piece.. It'll ruin your whole day

I have made my own, although I never got it back when a friend borrowed it. Since then I have found that you really don't need one.
To take it out, first secure it with some strong rope or chain so it won't fly out, although I have never had one try to do it, but just to be safe. Then lower the control arm all the way down. If it is not free at this point take a crowbar and pry the bottom pry the bottom part out.
There are a few way to reinstall depending on what spring you are using. One is to put it back in like you just took it back out and jack the control arm back up. This sometimes won't work as the spring is sometime to long.
The second method is safer but a little more tricky. Take the back the the control arm loose from the K-member, 2 bolts. Put the spring in the lower control arm, with the control Arm centered on a jack and start to jack it up into place. Go slow make sure the bolt holes line up, when the back hole line up place the bolts back in and continue the install.
The main thing is always be safe and always chain or rope the spring in so it will not fly away, and use a good jack. Also make sure the spring is line up correctly in the control arm other wise it will look jacked up like a 4x4.

Guys,
I figured out! The two hook compressor kit works, but I had to replace the long bolts in the kit with shorter ones. I had to use a jack to move the A-arm up into position because the springs will not compress enough to slide them in with the arm in the normal position. They worked perfectly. I would advise anyone doing the swap to do it that way.
Thanks for the input!!!

Here is the finished product. The complete suspension was replaced and it wasn't easy. Thanks to Sherwood Tire for the front alignment! Next is the exhaust and then the drive train.

I used the 2 hook style
so a total of 4 hooks 2 hooks per side and I had to cut about two inches off the threads to get mine to work
